v3.32.0 is a massive update for iPad that also largely lays the groundwork for Boost Blue's upcoming web and Mac apps. On top of the various changes targeting larger devices, it also adds support for Bluesky's new profile links, and adds pronoun support to profiles!

Boost Deck

The headline feature: Boost Blue now supports a deck-style UI for iPad (which will of course be available on web and Mac as well). Deck columns can be configured with the Deck button on the top right of the Home page, or from the Settings page.

Boost Deck supports up to 10 columns, each of which can be a page like Notifications or DMs, or any feed or list a user has saved. The layout is highly configurable. You can elect to have the same layout in portrait and landscape, or split into separate configurations for each orientation.

Columns will fill the available space equally, until doing so constrains their size past a certain point, after which the Deck becomes scrollable horizontally. You can also set an explicit width for any column; the rest of the columns will continue trying to fill available space or become scrollable if needed.

I've been loving the Deck so far, and I have further updates planned here, most notably allowing columns from multiple accounts and timeline streaming (showing new posts to a feed as they come in). I never had the chance to use TweetDeck back in the day, but if there are any other core features you'd like added please let me know!

iCloud Data Sync

Because Boost Blue is cross-platform and I've always hoped to release a web version at some point, Boost's cross device data sync doesn't use Apple's preferred solution. That isn't going away, but there have been complaints about needing to sign in, and about departing from what is a platform standard on iOS. This version adds iCloud as a data sync option. For new iOS users, this will be the default, for existing users you can switch your data sync provider in Settings.

Remember that if you choose iCloud, your data will not be synced to Android devices or the web app in the future! Data sync is also a premium feature, so if you want your read position and other settings synced to all of your devices, give Boost's paid plan a try!

There's nothing groundbreaking here, but it's important to note this change because I think Profile Links will be one of Bluesky's most important product decisions. Allowing users to benefit from their follower base is something that legacy platforms have tried to prevent; it's refreshing to see Bluesky take the complete opposite approach. Boost Blue now does the same, with the feature matching Bluesky's implementation almost exactly.

And on that note, a feature departure from Bluesky: Boost Blue now shows a user's declared pronouns on their profile, and allows users to set their pronouns while editing their profile. I've wanted to support this for a while, but Boost actually didn't have an edit profile function until recently, and showing a field that couldn't be set in the official app or Boost didn't make a ton of sense.

Shortcuts

For iPad users with an external keyboard, Boost Blue now supports shortcuts to navigate to any page. Command + (number) will switch to the relevant tab, Command + [ or ] will switch to the next or previous tab, and each page also has an explicit shortcut to open directly to it like Command + P for posting or Command + S for search. A full list of keyboard shortcuts is available under Behavior on the Settings page.

Other Stuff

  • The compose, drafts, and alt text composer pages have all been reworked to adapt to switching orientation, keyboard presence, and to fill available space.

  • You can now pin/unpin a post to your profile

  • And a bunch of bug fixes.
